Given today’s economic climate and industry shifts, science journalists and writers are facing unexpected challenges and transitions. To help our colleagues prepare for and adapt to new challenges and opportunities, the National Association of Science Writers offers its NASW Pivot Grant. Overseen by the NASW Board, these funds can be used for a wide variety of needs, including learning new skills, purchasing equipment,  traveling to interviews and conferences, updating portfolios and digital presence, or working with a financial planner or career coach. The Grant is funded by science writers for science writers — boosting those in need towards new opportunities.

Eligibility

Any professional science writer experiencing a recent hardship or unexpected career circumstances is invited to apply for up to $1,000. Recipients will be asked to write a short report on the use of funds.

While we recognize that financial challenges often extend to meeting the most basic of needs, grant funds are intended for professional development support. Funds may not be used to support the costs of daily living such as rent or utilities, though addition of VPN or WiFi would be considered if the set up of a home office is needed, for instance.

These funds are not intended for students, immediate graduates, or those transitioning into science writing from another field.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
